Loop

Loop road configurations are rare but exist where extreme elevation changes or geographic constraints force circular routing.

Notable examples include loop access roads on the Healy Pass between Cork and Kerry, loop sections on mountain roads in Wicklow and Donegal where switchback turns create near-circular geometry, and certain pier or harbor access roads that loop back on themselves.

Some multi-story car parks also use loop signage for spiral ramps.

The road ahead makes a circular or near-circular turn, often through 270 degrees or more.

This unusual geometry requires significant speed reduction and careful steering.

Reduce speed to 30 km/h or lower before entering the loop.

Use low gear to maintain control.

Be aware that the road may curve back underneath or alongside itself, creating unusual sight lines.

Watch for oncoming traffic which may appear from unexpected directions.

Do not accelerate until you have completed the loop and the road straightens.

Approaching loop road sections at excessive speed constitutes careless driving: 2 penalty points and fines to €2,000.

If speed causes loss of control or crossing into opposing traffic lanes on the loop, dangerous driving charges apply: 5 penalty points, fines to €5,000, imprisonment, and disqualification.

Loop sections often have poor visibility around their curves, and collisions on these unusual geometries typically result in serious impacts.

Maintain appropriate speed throughout the entire loop.

Loop road configurations rarely appear on standard driving tests due to their scarcity, but the principles of responding to unusual road geometry warnings are tested.

Written questions assess your understanding that unfamiliar road layout warnings require significant speed reduction and heightened caution.

If encountered during a test, examiners would expect approach speed below 30 km/h, appropriate gear selection (second or first), smooth steering throughout the unusual geometry, and controlled exit from the loop.

Excessive speed at any unfamiliar road layout results in Grade 2 faults minimum.
